Terra Anvil Table Top Role Playing Game (TTRPG) Code of Conduct

Purpose

The Terra Anvil role-playing community exists to create safe, welcoming, and fun spaces for collaborative storytelling and gaming, both in-person and online. This Code of Conduct sets the expectations for all participants. Any Game Master (GM) that is starting a new campaign or one-shot are REQUIRED to review this Code of Conduct with all participants during a session zero or before first game is launched.

1. Respect & Inclusion

  • All participants are expected to treat one another with respect.
  • Discrimination or harassment based on (but not limited to) race, gender, sexuality, disability, age, nationality, religion, or personal background will not be tolerated.
  • In-character actions and dialogue are not an excuse for out-of-character harassment or discriminatory behavior.

2. Harassment & Boundaries

  • Harassment of any kind (verbal, physical, online, or otherwise) is strictly prohibited.
  • Respect the personal boundaries of others at the table, both in and out of character.
  • Participants are encouraged to use safety tools (such as X-Cards, pause/break requests, or agreed-upon hand signals) to signal discomfort.

3. Mature Themes (18+ Content)

  • Games may include mature themes, including violence, horror, strong language, and adult situations.
  • Explicit sexual activity or nudity, either in-character or through props/costumes, is not permitted.

4. Props & Costumes

  • Props and costumes are welcome and encouraged, provided they are safe and appropriate for the venue.
  • No nudity, real weapons, or items that may cause harm or alarm.

5. Recording & Privacy

  • Audio and/or video recording of games is permitted only with the consent of all participants and the Game Master (GM).
  • Participants may withdraw consent at any time, and recording must immediately stop.
  • Any recordings must not be distributed publicly without explicit permission from all participants.
  • Games that may be recorded using Audio and/or Video and used for streaming, YouTube, etc… will require all participants to complete a Capture and Use of Likeness Consent Form.

6. Respect the Game Master (GM)

  • The GM facilitates the story and rules. Their rulings are final during the game session. Though sometimes GM fiat rules may be applied; Those rules that are changed must remain the same for the rest of the session.
  • Concerns or disagreements with rulings should be addressed respectfully after the session.

7. In-Character Exceptions

  • In-character conflicts, rivalries, or hostile actions are part of storytelling, but must always be agreed upon in principle by all involved players.
  • Out-of-character safety and respect come first.

8. Spotlighting

  • Participants are to share spotlighting and round robin rules. This will allow all participants to enjoy the game.
  • Talking over other players is discouraged but may happen from time to time. The GM will provide these rules in session zero.

9. Strike System

  • First violation: Warning from organizers or GM.
  • Second violation: Removal from the game or event, with possible suspension from future Terra Anvil activities.

10. GM Campaign Specific Rules

  • The GM has the ability to add to this Code of Conduct as he/she sees fit for each specific campaign.
  • House rules provided by the GM and adopted by the group must remain the same for the entire campaign unless it is causing negative effects for the game or group.

11. Accidental or Unintended Content (Online Play)

  • Accidental Exposure: If nudity, vulgarity, or otherwise inappropriate visual or audio content is accidentally shown during a live, non-recorded online game, the participant should immediately correct the issue (e.g., turning off video, muting audio, adjusting camera, removing offending material).
  • Good Faith Response: Accidental incidents will be treated as mistakes if corrected promptly and not repeated.
  • Organizer Action: The GM or event organizer may pause the game, address the situation, and remind participants of expectations.
  • Repeat or Deliberate Behavior: If inappropriate content occurs repeatedly, or appears intentional, it will be treated as a violation of the Code of Conduct and fall under the Strike System (two strikes → removal).
  • Surroundings: Participants are urged to check their surroundings for inappropriate items or distractions and handle them prior to the start of the game.

12. Responsibility of Participants

  • By joining Terra Anvil games (online or in person), participants agree to uphold this Code of Conduct.
  • Those participating online should have made arrangements for minimal distractions so they may enjoy the game and hear things clearly.
  • All participants share responsibility for maintaining a positive and safe play environment.

13. Discord specifics

  • Follow our server rules and Discord’s Terms of Service.
  • No harassment, hate speech, doxxing, spam, or NSFW content.
  • Use channels for their purpose; no mic spam; follow staff direction.
  • Bot commands belong in bot/utility channels unless otherwise noted.
  • Streaming/recording? Say so in the channel topic or message before you start.

14. Foundry VTT specifics

  • Fair play: no cheating, hidden automation, or exploiting modules.
  • Table etiquette: respect the GM and fellow players; keep chatter on topic during scenes.
  • Content notes: flag mature content ahead of time; use safety tools if provided (X-card, pause).
  • Assets: don’t upload or share copyrighted content you don’t own or have permission to use.
  • Privacy: in-session audio/video may be recorded only with clear consent from everyone present.
  • Technical respect: don’t attempt to access other users’ journals/actors without permission; no scanning or attacking the Foundry host.
